{Marathon Monday}

marathon monday means something different to most of the world this year.
today is the 118th running of the Boston Marathon, but one that has so much more meaning than ever before.  Qualifying for Boston is like the holy grail for marathon runners (at least for me!)  it is  something that i will most likely never do.  however, the strength of the running community and their support of the Boston Marathon after last years tragedy has been amazing.
i have a few blog friends living in the boston area, and it has been super neat to see their pictures of the downtown area and the finish line!  Check out Caroline's blog or her articles on Bostinno or Becky's blog for more marathon info this week.  {and they are both great reads too!}
the strength of the running community and their support of the Boston Marathon after last years tragedy has been amazing.  the running community has never been stronger.  all of these photos leave me so full of emotion.

marathon monday is also bringing about my very own set of emotions.
i am 6 days out from my race day.  i know i am ready, i've done my training... but i still can't harness the butterflies that i have been feeling on and off this week!

i can't wait to run get to nashville, and hopefully have the chance to run along that beautiful skyline.  the weather forecast has drastically improved {from a 70% chance of rain, to sunny and mid-70s}.  so, other than the nervous butterfly's and the mile long list of things i have to do this week...
i am ready!

bring it Nashville!

(move it monday)

i had this big thoughtful post in mind about rest, and listening to your body, and yada yada yada... but i just couldn't get it together.  Every time i sat down to type it up, i couldn't get it to come out like it sounded in my head.  so, instead you are going to get some random thoughts on marathon training.
*************************
I am in my last week of mileage before starting my taper.  i have already completed one 18 mile run and one 20 mile run.  these are difficult distances to run, its so mental.  especially the training.  come race day, you have excitement and adrenaline that helps alleviate a little of that.
  i found this quote that i thought was terribly appropriate:

"Long distance running is 90% mental and the other half is physical."
-Rich Davis

i have run more miles during the month of march, than i have in any one month for more than a year.
woah.
*************************
I've been very proud of my training so far, and have not found it terribly difficult to keep to my training schedule.
i have spent a good deal of time on the treadmill, but have been fortunate enough to have run a good portion of my runs outdoors.  i even had a few 60 + degree days.
(sorry to all my friends who are freezing up north!)

*************************
but then something happened... i ran my twenty mile run a week early
that run was one of those absolutely perfect runs.  you know the ones.  where the planets are aligned and everything feels great.  i actually finished that race and contemplated taking on that last 10K and calling it a marathon.  I had perfect temps, great company and held a pace that would have guaranteed my race day goal.  but i didn't do it.  i stuck with 20 miles, and then my brain took a vacation.  i didn't run for a full week.

Listen to your body.  Do not be a blind and deaf tenant.   –Dr. George Sheehan

 my body was tired. my mind was tired. my week was terribly over-scheduled.   i choose not to add extra stress to my already crazy week and listen to my body.  and you know what?  it was ok.  after taking a week off, my body felt rested and relaxed & ready to jump right back in to where my plan said i should be.

so for now, i say bring on my last high mileage week.  three 5 milers and a 20 miler.
then its taper time.  woo hoo!

{that's what he said}

This kid, cracks me up.  He is staying with grandma for the weekend so hubby and I can try to kick whatever bug we have all passed around. Here's hoping, right. I'm not quite sure what's happening in that pic, but it was accompanied by a text from grandma that said "b found his bed for the night".

As b is getting older, his "funnies" are less frequent. Here's a few of the latest.

Me: do you want a chocolate chip or peanut butter granola bar?
B: no thanks, I'm afraid of chocolate.

Seriously, is this my child? Afraid of chocolate?!

Me: what do horses wear on their feet to protect them?
B: cowboy boots.

We'll played, sir. We'll played.

{consistency}

its not too often that i feel compelled to write, but this week i saw an instagram post from my new friend from the healthy living summit, heather.  her photo (shown below) really made me think. alot.
recently, i have been feeling a little overwhelmed.  okay, a little may not even begin to describe it.
this 'challenge' from @mariatrains is set to allow you to make a few goals and try to stick with them for a full 30 days.  they say it only takes 21 days to create a habit, right?!
here's the deal.
i work long hours, commuting almost an hour each way, rotate between day and night shifts.  i work out 4 days a week (training for a half marathon & body pump a few times a week), i try to keep a clean house, keep up with laundry, grocery shop and meal plan, and still fit in being a wife and momma.  frankly... i'm tired.
and from time to time... my house starts to look like this.  and when that happens, typically my brain starts looking like this too.  i find myself coming home about 9 pm, exhausted and starving after working a 12-13 hour day.  during that day, i typically haven't eaten much and don't drink nearly enough water.  that of course leads to me eating what ever i can get my hands on, before falling into bed.  all to get up and do it over again.  this is a recipe for disaster.

my type a personality needs order is the culprit here.  i need order, routine, schedule, consistency.  i think that is why i like marathon training so much.  knowing what to do and when to do it works well for me.  i think that i need to implement the same system into the rest of my life...

i use my erin condren planner daily. it helps keep me mostly sane. i know who needs to be where, and when. whether i work days or nights, and who is picking up b from school.  we have monthly (or sometimes weekly) calendar meetings with me and hubby to make sure we both know the plan.

i find myself wishing that my hubby and i both had jobs where we had a set schedule, where we could be home for dinner together, and didn't have to plan our lives weeks in advance.  but i have come to accept that we will never have that kind of "normal".  so, i must make the best of the schedule we have.

here are my goals:
1. meal planning:
hopefully, having meals prepared so i can just heat them up will help to keep me from eating junk when i get home after a long day of work.  also, it is crockpot season.   thank goodness.  also, prepping fruit and veggies into snack size portions... i need to eat better for me food.

2. make a housework routine.
systems like flylady implement zone cleaning in order to keep you from spending an entire day cleaning and doing laundry.  i have implementing these techniques before, i just need to modify it to make it adaptable to my adjustable schedule.  i think this one is going to be key for me!

3. make a workout plan:
i don't have to be training for a marathon to stick to a workout program... however, there is a late fall marathon (nov 24th) that i need to make a decision on, and quick.  my plan needs to include running, strength training and YOGA!

4. establish a skincare routine
now that i am getting closer to my mid 30s, i feel like it is high time to establish a skin care routine that works for me.  both morning and night.  my skin is in the worst shape it has been in since i was a teenage.  most likely, that is related to stress, lack of sleep and not making the best dietary choices.

so this is how i am going to attempt the 30 days of consistency challenge.
any advice for me?! wish me luck!

brody and mommy date {september}

thursday, i took b out for our monthly mommy and brody date.
i let b pick where he wanted to go for dinner.
his selection?! sams club.  seriously, this kid passed up chick fil a for sams.

i haven't quite figured out where b's obsession with sams came from, however... i can guess.  first, there is an amazing waitress at one of our local restaurants named sam.  b and sam are friends.  he asks for her every time we go there, and she takes him around the restaurant with her. so there's that.
but also...
there's this.  yes. its a happy face.  the door man at sams, gerald. he draws a happy face on your receipt when you leave.  this man has won over my little b.  he looks for him every time we go in, or even if we just stop at the sams gas station, he tells me he needs to see gerald.  it is hysterical.
(we really don't go that frequently either. maybe 2 x week for gas and maybe once a month into the actual store. weird, huh?)
so, dinner? it was pizza. and pretzel. and that darn 'bear drink' that daddy introduced him to.
this dinner selection being the reason we only frequent here once a month or so.
but, for some reason it makes him insanely happy.
he somehow even sweet talked himself into ice cream
b was super talkative and was socializing with all the employees, and they all thought he was something else.  the nice man at the food counter brought him ice cream for being such a good boy.
***********
we then went home and promptly crashed from all the sugar/junk food consumption.
hey, i gotta let the kid live a little bit, right?

the sickies

our little family has had a rough summer.  it seems that at least one of us has been either sick or injured for the last three months!  i believe we are almost on the mend around here.
this last few weeks have included lots of movie watching on the couch for momma and b, lots of rest and fluids, and multiple doctors appointments.

we have finally gotten b well again, and he is back to his crazy self.
me on the other hand... i am having a terrible time with the weather and my allergies.
i take for granted the fact that my asthma is pretty under control for the most part.  i believe that my running has played a huge part in strengthening my lungs.  but, all it takes is one big weather change and i am down for the count.  i am loving the 50-60 degrees in august, but my lungs don't agree.

this has been going on for almost two weeks, and today i had my second doctors appointment, and finally think we landed on a combination of prescriptions that will let me rest and start feeling better!  Here's hoping.
wow, thats a lot of medicine.  haha.

we are hoping to be back to a more consistent and healthy schedule soon!

{life}

it seems like life is just whizzing by, as fast as it can... leaving us barely able to keep up.  i am having a hard time believing that in 2 months, b will be 3!
***********
so, here is a replay of some of our ordinary days...

we found a little swimming hole at our local park, which we had a blast splashing and playing in.
(of course, we found out shortly afterwards, there is contaminated water there... so we won't be back)
there have been multiple trips to the zoo...
working in the garden with daddy...
lots of cleaning and organizing...

cooking up new & yummy recipes...
a mommy & daddy weekend away with lots of good friends...
 mommy runs...

and mommy & brody run/walks.
(i don't think i will ever get to the point of being able to run much distance with this dang stroller)
an emergency visit to the dentist for mommy...
trips to the playground...
playing in the rain...
and a long week with a sick little guy...
a few doctors appointments, a chest X-ray, 1 ear infection and a case of viral pneumonia...
finally, after a full week, brody is starting to feel a little better!
*****
what have you been up to in your busy lives? can you believe summer is almost over?
